Objective(s):

Allow students to become familiar with what
printmaking is. Explain the process of intaglio and the advantages of producing
multiple prints at once.

High School Level Lesson
Lesson:
·
Introduce artist: Inka Essenhigh
·
Define printmaking and what sets it apart from
other art making methods
·
Teach and demonstrate simple methods for
intaglio including dry point and line etching.
·
Another option could be making simple prints out
of plexiglass.
Activities:
·
Homework in preparation for this lesson:
o
Research 5 artists who have participated in
printmaking. Turn in research including the names of the artists, an example of
their work, what the artwork is about, and sources.
·
Opening Activity: Students will share with a
partner who was their favorite artist they research and why.
·
Discussion: How does the way we see the world
change when we think about more than we physically see? How can this influence
art?
·
Brainstorm Activity: Take 5 minutes to write
down a list of adjectives that describe a dream-like world. Take 5 more minutes
to write a list of adjectives that describe real life. Take 15 minutes to write
out a concept that combines real life with dream-like qualities and sketch out
some thumbnails.
·
The Assignment: Create an art piece based on the
developed concept using printmaking. Have at least 2 good quality prints to
turn in.
Formative Assessment:
·
Did the student actively participate in all
activities?
·
How clear is the concept the student used in
his/her art? Can the student explain the art piece to the class?
·
Did the student complete at least two prints
from one plate?
